18TH JOINT DEFENCE WORKING COMMITTEE MEETING BETWEEN BRUNEI DARUSSALAM AND AUSTRALIA

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Thursday, 25 November 2021 – The Ministry of Defence of Brunei Darussalam and the Department of Defence of Australia conducted the 18th Joint Defence Working Committee (JDWC) meeting virtually today to further strengthen the existing bilateral defence relations between both countries and identify areas of defence and military cooperation that are mutually beneficial. 

The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Haji Adi Ihram bin Dato Paduka Haji Mahmud, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Strategy), Ministry of Defence, and Mr. David Lewis, Assistant Secretary for South East Asia, International Policy Division, Department of Defence of Australia. 

Also, in attendance both physically and virtually were Lieutenant Colonel Dan Hauser, the Australian Defence Adviser to Brunei Darussalam; Commander Sonny Iskandar bin Rasani, Brunei Darussalam’s Defence Adviser to Australia, as well as civilian and military senior officers from both countries.  

During the meeting, both sides discussed bilateral defence matters pertaining to exchanges at various levels including courses, training and exercises as well as defence cooperation matters, including cooperation in the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus initiatives such as the ASEAN Direct Communications Infrastructure (ADI), and the 4th cycle of the ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Group on Military Medicine, which is currently co-chaired by Brunei Darussalam and Australia from 2021 to 2024. 

The JDWC between Brunei Darussalam and Australia was established through the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation between the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the Government of Australia signed on 10 May 1999. The MoU serves as a framework for fostering closer defence relations and cooperation between the defence establishments and armed forces of both countries, such as courses and training, military exercises, exchange of information on matters pertaining to security and exchange of visits between the respective defence and military senior officials.




MESYUARAT JAWATANKUASA KERJA PERTAHANAN BERSAMA DI ANTARA NEGARA BRUNEI DARUSSALAM DAN AUSTRALIA KALI KE-18

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Khamis, 25 November 2021 – Negara Brunei Darussalam dan Australia telah mengadakan Mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Kerja Pertahanan Bersama (JKPB) yang ke-18 secara dalam talian bagi meningkatkan lagi hubungan pertahanan yang sedia ada di antara kedua negara dan bagi mengenalpasti bidang-bidang kerjasama pertahanan yang bermanfaat kepada kedua-dua negara.

Mesyuarat tersebut dipengerusikan bersama oleh Yang Mulia Haji Adi Ihram bin Dato Paduka Haji Mahmud, Timbalan Setiausaha Tetap (Dasar dan Strategi), Kementerian Pertahanan, Negara Brunei Darussalam dan David Lewis, Penolong Setiausaha Asia Tenggara, Bahagian Dasar Antarabangsa, Jabatan Pertahanan Australia. 

Turut hadir pada mesyuarat tersebut secara fizikal dan dalam talian adalah Leftenan Kolonel Dan Hauser, Penasihat Pertahanan Australia ke Negara Brunei Darussalam; Komander Sonny Iskandar bin Rasani, Penasihat Pertahanan Negara Brunei Darussalam ke Australia serta pegawai-pegawai kanan awam dan tentera dari kedua-dua negara.

Semasa mesyuarat tersebut, kedua-dua pihak membincangkan hal-hal pertahanan dua hala yang berkaitan dengan pertukaran di pelbagai peringkat termasuk kursus, latihan dan eksesais serta kerjasama pertahanan termasuk inisiatif dalam Mesyuarat Menteri-Menteri Pertahanan ASEAN (ADMM) dan ADMM-Plus seperti ASEAN Direct Communications infrastructure (ADI), kitaran ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Group on Military Medicine ke-4 yang dipengerusikan bersama oleh Negara Brunei Darussalam dan Australia dari tahun 2021 hingga 2024. 

JKPB di antara Negara Brunei Darussalam dan Australia telah ditubuhkan melalui Memorandum Persefahaman (MoU) mengenai Kerjasama Pertahanan di antara Kerajaan Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam dan Kerajaan Australia yang ditandatangani pada 10 Mei 1999. MoU berkenaan berfungsi sebagai rangka kerja untuk memupuk hubungan pertahanan dan kerjasama yang lebih erat di antara Kementerian Pertahanan dan angkatan tentera kedua-dua negara, seperti kursus dan latihan, eksesais ketenteraan, pertukaran maklumat mengenai perkara-perkara yang berkaitan dengan keselamatan dan pertukaran lawatan di antara pegawai-pegawai pertahanan dan tentera masing-masing.
