SECRETARY OF DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA MAKES A WORKING VISIT TO BRUNEI DARUSSALAM
BOLKIAH GARRISON, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 – Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Retired) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd. Yussof, the Second Minister of Defence today received a courtesy call by Mr. Greg Moriarty, the Secretary of Defence of Australia, who is currently in Brunei Darussalam for a one-day visit.

Mr. Greg Moriarty is the first Australian Secretary of Defence to make a working visit to Brunei Darussalam. Also present were Her Excellency Nicola Rosenblum, the Australian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam and Brigadier General (Retired) Dato Seri Pahlawan Shahril Anwar bin Haji Ma'awiah, the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Defence.

During the call, both sides reaffirmed their longstanding and close friendship between both countries in the field of defence. Both sides also expressed their utmost satisfaction with the progress of the defence relations between Brunei Darussalam and Australia and the active bilateral as well as multilateral engagements particularly within the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus).

Following the call, the Australian Secretary of Defence then made a courtesy call on Major General Pengiran Dato Paduka Seri Aminan bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud, Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF). Also in attendance was the Chief of Staff, RBAF and Director of Intelligence. 

As part of his working visit, the Australian Secretary of Defence also visited the Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) where he called on First Admiral Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Othman bin Haji Suhaili @ Suhaily, Commander of RBN and the Australian delegation was subsequently given a tour of the offshore patrol vessel, KDB Darussalam at the Muara Naval Base.

The Australian Secretary of Defence’s visit underscores the long-standing defence relations between Brunei Darussalam and Australia that was fostered through a spectrum of bilateral engagements including in the form of exchanges of visits; agreements; intelligence exchanges; Joint Defence Working Committee meetings; military exercises; trainings; and courses. 

Beyond bilateral engagements, both sides also actively interact through multilateral engagements including under the ambit of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) where Brunei Darussalam and Australia are the current co-chairs of the ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Group on Military Medicine for the current 2020-2023 cycle.




SETIAUSAHA PERTAHANAN AUSTRALIA MEMBUAT LAWATAN KERJA KE NEGARA BRUNEI DARUSSALAM 

BOLKIAH GARISON, Rabu, 22 Januari 2020 – Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Mejar Jeneral (Bersara) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd. Yussof, Menteri Pertahanan Kedua pada hari ini menerima kunjungan hormat daripada Mr. Greg Moriarty, Setiausaha Pertahanan Australia, yang sedang berada di Negara Brunei Darussalam.

Beliau merupakan Setiausaha Pertahanan Australia yang pertama untuk membuat lawatan kerja ke Negara Brunei Darussalam. Turut hadir ialah Puan Yang Terutama Nicola Rosenblum, Pesuruhjaya Tinggi Australia ke Negara Brunei Darussalam dan Brigedier Jeneral (Bersara) Dato Seri Pahlawan Shahril Anwar bin Haji Ma’awiah, Setiausaha Tetap di Kementerian Pertahanan.

Semasa kunjungan tersebut, kedua-dua belah pihak menekankan hubungan yang rapat dan kian terjalin di antara kedua-dua buah negara termasuk dalam bidang pertahanan. Kedua-dua belah pihak juga merakamkan rasa puas hati di atas perkembangan hubungan pertahanan Negara Brunei Darussalam dan Australia serta interaksi-interaksi dua hala dan pelbagai kala yang aktif khususnya di bawah ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus).

Menyusuli kunjungan itu, Setiausaha Pertahanan Australia turut membuat kunjungan hormat ke atas Mejar Jeneral Pengiran Dato Paduka Seri Aminan bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud, Pemerintah Angkatan Bersenjata Diraja Brunei (ABDB). Turut hadir adalah Ketua Staf ABDB dan Pengarah Perisikan.

Antara perisian lawatan kerja Setiausaha Pertahanan Australia itu, beliau juga melawat Tentera Laut Diraja Brunei (TLDB) dan mengadakan perjumpaan dengan Laksamana Pertama Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Othman bin Haji Suhaili @ Suhaily, Pemerintah TLDB, yang mana delegasi Australia turut diberikan peluang untuk melawat kapal Offshore Patrol Vessel, KDB Darussalam di Pangkalan TLDB di Muara.
Lawatan daripada Setiausaha Pertahanan Australia tersebut menandakan hubungan pertahanan yang kian terjalin di antara Negara Brunei Darussalam dan Australia serta terus diperkukuhkan melalui pelbagai interaksi termasuk pertukaran lawatan; perjanjian-perjanjian; pertukaran perisikan; mesyuarat Joint Defence Working Committee; eksesais ketenteraan; latihan; dan kursus.

Di samping interaksi dua hala, kedua-dua belah pihak juga aktif dalam bidang pelbagai hala termasuk platform ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) yang mana Negara Brunei Darussalam dan Australia merupakan pengerusi bersama ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Group on Military Medicine bagi kitaran 2020-2023.
