BOLKIAH GARRISON, Wednesday 4 November 2015 – In conjunction with CARAT 2015, an annual Public Affairs Symposium was held at the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (SHHBIDSS).

Responding wisely and positively with the public on social media by focusing on the organisation’s objectives is important to get the correct message across to public who wants to know why an organization is doing what it is doing.

Today’s gathering saw a talk by Lt Kevin. L Chambers, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S Navy. He discussed the four-step process of public relations that the U.S Naval adopts on how they communicate their goals and objectives effectively to the public locally, internationally and globally. The four-step process is research, planning, implementation and evaluation.

He further discussed about how greatly social media platforms are used to communicate their messages across the ‘social media’ community and make the three types public: active public, aware public and latent public understands the organization, when traditional media lacks that medium to promote your goals and objectives.

He said, social media is an intimate communication platform that allows public relations affairs officers to engage in direct dialogue with stakeholders on a range of topics and in real-time; therefore, a smart and strategic social media team is essential to successfully managing and disseminating your PR duties via digital communications.
