TANAH JAMBU, Tuesday, 7 March 2023 – The Defence Academy of Royal Brunei Armed Forces (DA RBAF) and the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom held the inaugural South East Asia Conference of Commandants from 7 to 8 march 2023, bearing the theme of ‘Professional Military Education in the 21st Century’ at the DA RBAF Auditorium today.
Present as the Guest of Honour to officiate the opening ceremony was Yang Mulia Brigadier General (U) Dato Seri Pahlawan Mohammad Sharif bin Dato Paduka Haji Ibrahim, Commander Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF). Also present were RBAF Service Commanders, military and civilian directors, Defence Attaches/Advisers, representatives from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), as well as RBAF officers.
The two-day conference was co-chaired by Colonel Pengiran Sharifuddin bin Pengiran Haji Yusof, Commandant DA RBAF and Major General Andrew Roe, Commandant of Defence Academy of the United Kingdom. The conference was participated by the heads of defence universities, military academies and representatives from the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Republic of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Republic of the Philippines, the Republic of Singapore, the Kingdom of Thailand and the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.
The ceremony began with
Surah Al-Fatihah and a
Doa recitation led by an officer from the RBAF Religious Directorate and followed by a keynote address by the Guest of Honour. In his address, the Guest of Honour emphasised the importance of inculcating professional military education and learning amongst personnel, especially in facing the dynamic and evolving international security architecture and geopolitics. This then proceeded with a video presentation to officiate the opening ceremony.
The ceremony continued with the presentation of two introductory topics, started with a presentation on ‘Overview of Professional Military Education with Regional Perspective’ by Dr Bernard Loo, Senior Fellow Coordinator of the MSc (Strategic Studies) Programme of S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; and proceeded with a presentation on ‘Delivering Education in the 21st Century’ delivered by Major General Andrew Roe, Commandant of Defence Academy of the United Kingdom.
The conference features presentations from numerous Heads of Delegations and selected presenters covering topics such as blended learning (lessons from COVID), human dimensions, information operations and educating for multi-domain operations. Apart from sharing best practices, this conference also serves as an important platform for defence diplomacy and strengthening of training relationships with higher military education institutes in the region.

South East Asia Conference of Commandants dari 7 hingga 8 Mac 2023 yang bertema
‘Professional Military Education in the 21st Century’ bertempat di Auditorium AP ABDB hari ini.
Hadir selaku tetamu kehormat bagi merasmikan majlis pembukaan tersebut ialah Yang Mulia Brigedier Jeneral (U) Dato Seri Pahlawan Mohammad Sharif bin Dato Paduka Haji Ibrahim, Pemerintah Tentera Udara Diraja Brunei (TUDB). Turut hadir adalah Pemerintah-Pemerintah Angkatan Tentera, Pengarah-Pengarah tentera dan awam, Atase-Atase/Penasihat-Penasihat Pertahanan, perwakilan dari Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) serta pegawai-pegawai ABDB.
Persidangan selama dua hari ini dipengerusikan bersama oleh Kolonel Pengiran Sharifuddin bin Pengiran Haji Yusof, Komandan AP ABDB dan Mejar Jeneral Andrew Roe, Komandan Akademi Pertahanan United Kingdom. Persidangan ini disertai oleh ketua-ketua universiti pertahanan dan akademi tentera dari Kerajaan Kemboja, Republik Indonesia, Malaysia, Republik Filipina, Republik Singapura, Kerajaan Thailand dan Republik Sosialis Viet Nam.
Majlis dimulakan dengan bacaan Surah Al-Fatihah dan Doa dipimpin oleh seorang pegawai Jabatanarah Agama ABDB diikuti dengan ucaptama daripada Tetamu Kehormat di mana beliau menekankan kepentingan menerapkan pendidikan tentera profesional dan pembelajaran kepada anggota-anggota tentera, terutama sekali dalam menghadapi keadaan sekuriti antarabangsa dan geopolitik yang dinamik dan sentiasa berkembang. Ini kemudian diteruskan dengan tayangan video bagi merasmikan pembukaan majlis tersebut.

Persidangan ini menampilkan pembentangan dari beberapa Ketua Delegasi serta pembentang yang terpilih, di mana topik yang dikongsikan meliputi pembelajaran teradun (pengajaran daripada COVID), dimensi manusia, operasi maklumat dan pendidikan dalam operasi pelbagai lingkungan. Selain dari perkongsian amalan terbaik, persidangan ini juga berperanan sebagai landasan penting bagi diplomasi pertahanan serta mengukuhkan hubungan latihan bersama institut pengajian tinggi ketenteraan di rantau ini.
