BOLKIAH GARRISON, Monday, 15 December 2014 – With the consent of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam, two Ministry of Defence scholars were granted scholarship extensions to further their studies in a signing ceremony held today.
The ceremony was held at the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies.
Adding to the three scholars granted scholarship extensions in September this year, one Supreme Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces scholar, and one Royal Brunei Armed Forces scholar were granted scholarship extensions to further their studies to the Master’s degree and Bachelor’s degree level.
The Supreme Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces scholars is Dk Nur Syazwani binti Pg Hj Kamarulzaman while the Royal Brunei Armed Forces scholar is Nur Hazimah Faizah binti Abd Rahim.
Dk Nur Syazwani binti Pg Haji Kamarulzaman, recipient of the Supreme Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Scholarship 2011, has successfully completed her Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at The Sheffield University in United Kingdom a First Class Honours. She will be pursuing a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering for two years at National University of Singapore, Singapore.
Nur Hazimah Faizah binti Abd Rahim, a recipient of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Scholarship 2012, has successfully completed her A levels in Cardiff Sixth Form College, United Kingdom, with 1A* and 2A. She will be pursuing a degree in MBBS Medicine at the University of Otago, New Zealand for six years.
Scholars have to meet the following minimum requirements to be granted extensions to their scholarships by the Ministry of Defence:
1) Graduate with a minimum of an Upper Second Class Bachelor’s degree (for those aiming to continue to their Master’s degree);
2) Obtain AAA in A level (for those aiming to continue to their Bachelor’s degree);
3) Taking courses that are directly related /relevant and required by the Ministry of Defence ;
4) Be accepted into top universities in the world; and
5) Maintain a record of high integrity and discipline while under the scholarship.
To date, there are 28 scholars who have been granted extensions to their scholarships under the Ministry of Defence to further their education. Of the 28, 13 have chosen to serve under the Royal Brunei Armed Forces as military officers and 15 scholars have chosen to serve under the Ministry of Defence as civilian officers.
The recipients of the Ministry of Defence scholarships are constantly encouraged to further their studies to a higher level in internationally acclaimed institutions to help nurture them into pioneering leaders for service, not just for the Ministry of Defence, but also for the country.
Witnessing the ceremony as guest of honor was the Deputy Minister of Defence, Dato Paduka Haji Mustappa bin Haji Sirat. Also attending the ceremony was the Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah, who signed the scholarship agreement on behalf of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, and the Acting Permanent Secretary of Administration and Finance, Haji Azhar bin Haji Ahmad, who signed on behalf of the Ministry of Defence.
The ceremony was also attended by other members of Defence Executive Committee, officers in the Ministry of Defence, invited guests, the scholars’ families and other recipients of the Ministry of Defence Scholarships.
