SG AKAR CAMP, Thursday 5 February 2015 – His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifudien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Minister of Defence and Supreme Commander of Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) consented to officiate the Sovereign’s Parade Ceremony for the 12th Intake Officer Cadets.
The ceremony took place at the Parade Square of the RBAF Officer Cadet School (OCS) in Sungai Akar Camp this morning.
Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by the Deputy Minister of Defence, Dato Paduka Haji Mustappa bin Haji Sirat and the Commander of RBAF, Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah.
Shortly after the arrival, His Majesty received the Royal Salute and inspected the Static Guard of Honour mounted by personnel of the Royal Brunei Land Force (RBLF).
His Majesty was later ushered to the dais and once again received the Royal Salute. His Majesty then consented to inspect the parade which comprised of 22 Officer Cadets of the 12th Intake and 30 Officer Cadets of the 13th Intake who are currently undergoing training. The parade was led by Captain Khairul Faizin bin Haji Abdul Gapar.
His Majesty in his Titah highlighted the need for military personnel to upgrade their knowledge and expertise, enabling them to be better prepared for any unforeseen circumstances in the future.
His Majesty said that efforts to enhance the expertise of trainers also needs to be continuously addressed through the best possible teaching methods.
The recent introduction of the virtual learning environment system in the OCS will hopefully be able to provide the learning processes with new experiences.
His Majesty also underlined the need for effective procedures to select qualified trainers for the whole training institution of the RBAF.
His Majesty added the future of the country depended greatly on the younger generations who could provide better human resources and integrity especially when they have the necessary physical and spiritual strength.
In the Titah, His Majesty congratulates the 12th intake of the Officer Cadets, saying they deserve to be honoured for their courage in answering the challenge of a career in the Armed Forces.
After the Titah, His Majesty then conferred awards on the officer cadets who have performed well from the RBAF Officer Cadet School’s 12th Intake.
The most prestigious ‘Sword of Honour Award’ was presented to 18433 OCdt Amirul Adini bin Haji Amir Abas who earned through excellence in all aspects of training. Sword of honour recipients are recognised for their exemplary performance and leadership qualities. He holds a Master of Science in Material Science and Engineering from Imperial College London and also granted with the RBAF Supreme Commander Scholarship
The second award for the ‘Best Overall in Academic Award’ was presented to 20841 OCdt (U) Mohd Ali Farid bin Ibrahim who has been described as possessing intellect, a thorough and critical thinker throughout the training duration. He holds a Master of Energy Studies from Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
The ‘Best Military Skills Award’ was presented to 50842 OCdt Mohd Ros Azmi bin Roslan. He holds a Degree in Business with Finance from Northumbria University, United Kingdom. This award is given to an Officer Cadet who has been selected among the best in the most excellent achievement in all Military Skill subjects.
Finally, for ‘Best in Physical Training Endurance Award’ was presented to 50843 OCdt (L) Haji Mohd Syahmi Fakhurullah bin Haji Mohd Is’srah, who holds a Bachelor of Management from Universiti Tun Abdul Razak, Malaysia. This award is in recognition of the best achievement for an Officer Cadet in outstanding physical training accomplishment throughout the training period.
A Doa Selamat was then read by the Assistant Head of RBAF Religious Department (JA’MAAT), Captain Ariffin bin Amit. His Majesty once more received the Royal Salute before leaving the parade square.
With the 12th Sovereign’s Parade, some 22 officers from the Officer Cadet School of the Defence Academy of the RBAF had been commissioned. Eight have been placed in the Royal Brunei Land Forces, another 5 officers assigned to the Royal Brunei Navy and 9 officers in the Royal Brunei Air Force.
From the Parade Square, His Majesty consented to proceed to the Sungai Akar Camp Officers’ Mess for a luncheon. There, His Majesty also consented to receive a pasambah the “AL-ATIJAH WAQTA” which is a compass and a sundial. The pasambah symbolises the importance of time and one’s direction in the context of religion and nationhood. In the military context, the importance of good time management is a huge responsibility, being a component of discipline for each Officer Cadet, in particular in carrying out the task entrusted upon them and their loyalty towards the Monarch in protecting country’s security.
The cadets also presented their journey book, which documented their training over the last 48 weeks to His Majesty.
The event then saw a ‘junjung ziarah’ from the Officer Cadets with their families on His Majesty before signing the Royal Parchment.
Prior to leaving the ceremony, His Majesty consented to receive another ‘junjung ziarah’ from instructors and officers of the Officer Cadet School. The event then ended with a group photo session.
