NAY PYI TAW, MYANMAR Tuesday 20 May 2014 – The ASEAN Defence Ministers gathered in Nay Pyi Taw for the 8th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (8th ADMM).
Representing His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzadin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to the 8th ADMM was Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin Haji Umar, Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Yasmin, as Brunei’s ADMM Leader, met with his ASEAN counterparts to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relationships.
During the bilateral meetings, the Brunei’s ADMM Leader expressed his deepest appreciation for the full support of establishing a direct communications link in the ADMM process, an initiative introduced by Brunei Darussalam at this year’s ADMM. ASEAN Defence Ministers have responded to the call made by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam last year, in His Majesty’s capacity as the Chairman of the 22nd ASEAN Summit, in supporting the idea of putting in place practical procedures, which could assist in avoiding undesired incidents at sea.
Brunei’s ADMM Leader also expressed his gratitude for the support in the implementation of the two Brunei-led initiatives in the ADMM, namely establishing the ASEAN Defence Interaction Programmes and the establishment of the Logistics Support Framework.
Brunei’s ADMM Leader also informed the planned joint exercise between the ADMM-Plus Maritime Security and the ADMM-Plus Counter Terrorism to be held sometime next year.
Brunei’s ADMM Leader also had a bilateral meeting with China’s Minister of National Defence His Excellency General Chang Wanquan. They expressed confidence that both sides will continue to enhance both the personal friendship and much-valued bilateral defence relations.
ASEAN Defence Ministers will meet His Excellency General Chang at the ASEAN-China Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting.
