JERUDONG, Thursday 5 Dec 2013 – The Deputy Minister of Defence, Dato Paduka Haji Mustappa bin Haji Sirat today host a call to Deputy Minister of Defence of Vietnam and Commander In-Chief, Vietnam People’s Navy, Admiral Nguyen Van Hien at BRIDEX Conference Hall. Also in attendance at the meeting were senior officers from both countries.
During the meeting both sides exchange updates on the current bilateral defence and military cooperation between both countries. Earlier in the day, both countries representatives also witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between The Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) and the Vietnam People’s Navy (VPN) on Bilateral Cooperation.
Signing on behalf of the Royal Brunei Navy is the Commander of the Royal Brunei Navy, Laksamana Pertama Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Abd Halim bin Haji Mohd Hanifah and Deputy Minister of Defence of Vietnam And Commander In-Chief, Vietnam People’s Navy, Admiral Nguyen Van Hien. The signing is hoped to further enhance the naval cooperation by both countries in ensuring peace and stability on the sea.
Brunei Darussalam and Vietnam first established defence relation through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation on 16 November 2005. The MoU serves as a framework for fostering closer defence relations and cooperation between the defence establishments and armed forces of both countries, such as military training and exercises, exchange of information on matters pertaining to security, training and search and rescue and anti-piracy initiatives and exchange of visits between the respective defence and military officials.
