Tuesday 29 January 2013 – The Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (SHHBIDSS) conducted its fifth East Asia Security Outlook (EASO) seminar at the Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong. Five international experts presented their views on defence, strategic and security issues in East Asia.

This year’s session looked at the recent developments in defence and strategic relations in the region and touched on maritime security, military modernization and major power relations.It highlighted the need to continue pursuing the norms of peaceful engagement and conflict prevention.

It also discussed the importance of strengthening ASEAN centrality and unity in the strive to build trust and confidence, cooperative norms and peace-oriented values.

EASO is an annual seminar conducted by SHHBIDSS since 2009. It is aimed at providing deeper understanding and contributing to the discourse on the challenges and approaches in addressing current defence and security concerns. The seminar brings together defence officials, policy analysts from various government agencies, as well as academics, involved in or researching on defence and security discussions and cooperation.
