BOLKIAH GARRISON, Tuesday 17 November 2020 – The ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting (ADSOM) convened virtually this morning chaired by Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Minister of Defence, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, in his capacity as Vietnam’s ADSOM Leader.
Representing the Ministry of Defence of Brunei Darussalam was Brigadier General (Retired) Dato Seri Pahlawan Shahril Anwar bin Haji Ma’awiah, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Defence, in his capacity as Brunei Darussalam’s ADSOM Leader.
In his opening remarks, Vietnam’s ADSOM Leader highlighted, among others, Vietnam’s theme “Defence Cooperation for a Cohesive and Responsive ASEAN”, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting ASEAN and expressed his appreciation to ASEAN Member States for their continued efforts towards progress in ASEAN defence cooperation.
The ADSOM convened to endorse the work from ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting Working Group (ADSOM WG) and discussed on the preparation for the upcoming 14th ASEAN Defence Minister’s Meeting (ADMM) scheduled for December 2020.
The ADSOM also reported on ADSOM WG held virtually the previous day, the 17th ASEAN Chiefs of Defence Forces Meeting (ACDFM) held virtually on 24 September 2020 and Track II Network of ASEAN Defence and Security Institutions (NADI) which held its 13th Meeting and 5th NADI Retreat on 9-12 March 2020.
The ADSOM will be followed by ADSOM-Plus to continue the momentum of ASEAN defence cooperation with ASEAN’s eight Dialogue Partners in the ADMM-Plus on 19 November 2020.
MESYUARAT ASEAN DEFENCE SENIOR OFFICIALS’ MEETING SECARA TALIAN
BOLKIAH GARISON, Selasa 17 November 2020 – Mesyuarat Pegawai-Pegawai Kanan Pertahanan ASEAN (ADSOM) secara talian telah diadakan pagi ini dan dipengerusikan oleh Leftenan Jeneral Kanan Nguyen Chi Vinh, Timbalan Menteri Pertahanan Republik Sosialis Vietnam, selaku Ketua ADSOM Vietnam.
Mewakili Kementerian Pertahanan Negara Brunei Darussalam ialah Brigedier Jeneral (B) Dato Seri Pahlawan Shahril Anwar bin Haji Ma’awiah, Setiausaha Tetap Kementerian Pertahanan, selaku Ketua ADSOM Negara Brunei Darussalam.
Semasa ucapan alu-aluan beliau, Ketua ADSOM Vietnam antaralain menekankan tema “Defence Cooperation for a Cohesive and Responsive ASEAN”, terutamanya dalam konteks penularan wabak COVID-19 di rantau ASEAN dan merakamkan penghargaan kepada negara-negara ahli ASEAN atas usaha yang berterusan ke arah memajukan kerjasama pertahanan ASEAN.
Mesyuarat ADSOM telah diadakan bagi meluluskan kerja dari mesyuarat Kumpulan Kerja Pegawai-Pegawai Pertahanan ASEAN (ADSOM WG) dan membincangkan persiapan bagi mesyuarat Menteri-Menteri Pertahanan ASEAN ke-14 (ADMM) yang dijadualkan untuk bulan Disember 2020.
Mesyuarat ADSOM juga telah melaporkan mengenai ADSOM WG yang telah diadakan sehari sebelum, mesyuarat ASEAN Chiefs of Defence Forces Meeting (ACDFM) yang telah diadakan secara talian pada 24 September 2020 dan mesyuarat Track II Network of ASEAN Defence and Security Institutions (NADI) ke-13 dan NADI Retreat ke-5 yang telah diadakan pada 9-12 March 2020.
Mesyuarat ADSOM ini akan diteruskan dengan mesyuarat ADSOM-Plus bagi meneruskan momentum kerjasama pertahanan ASEAN dengan lapan Rakan Dialog ASEAN di dalam ADMM-Plus pada 19 November 2020.
