BEIJING, CHINA Tuesday 15 Oct 2013 - The 6th ARF Peacekeeping Experts’ Meeting was held at the Peacekeeping Centre, Ministry of National Defence, Beijing, China from 15th October to 17th October 2013. This meeting was co-chaired by Cambodia and China and was officially opened by Admiral Sun Jianguo, Deputy Chief of General Staff, PLA.
His opening remarks emphasied that the Peacekeeping Experts’ Meeting of ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) is a mechanism through which peacekeeping experts of regional countries can discuss specific ways to build confidence, synergy and inter-operability among regional peacekeepers as well as to enhance regional peacekeeping capacity.
The theme of the 6th ARF Peacekeeping Expert Meeting was “Enhancing Pragmatic Cooperation: Improving Peacekeeping Training with Joint Efforts”, in which, the meeting encouraged representatives and experts from peacekeeping operation related agencies to discuss in-depth about the best practices and lessons learned in peacekeeping training as well as specific measures to enhance regional cooperation.
Therefore, ARF members can explore concrete measures for enhancing international cooperation in peacekeeping training through building the trainer’s pool, sharing of training materials, researching teaching approaches, and carrying out multi-national peacekeeping joint exercises. The delegation from Negara Brunei Darussalam constituted personnel from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and the Royal Brunei Police Force.
The conduct of the 6th ARF Peacekeeping Experts’ Meeting was organized into different session, consisting of group discussions and talks by invited speakers from the ARF members. The topics presented included topics such as “Experience in Training Enabling Units or Infantry Units” and “Challenges with the UN Peacekeeping Operation” which was delivered by Herve Ladsous, the UN Under-Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations of United Nations.
With the joint efforts the ARF can take advantages of the this podium to provide policy advice to the UN Department Peacekeeping Operations and draw up the guideline principles of the troop-contributing countries peacekeeping training so as to contribute more to the world peace and security.
