PULAU PINANG, MALAYSIA, Saturday 19 September 2015 - The 17th Joint Defence Working Committee (JDWC) meeting between Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam was successfully held in Pulau Pinang, Malaysia.
The 17th JDWC meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Defence, Malaysia. The meeting was co-chaired by Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Sri Abdul Rahim bin Mohd Radzi, Secretary General, Ministry of Defence, Malaysia and Datin Paduka Hajah Suriyah binti Haji Umar, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Brunei Darussalam.
In attendance were senior officers from both ministries and senior military personnel from RBAF and RMAF. Both Co-Chairs were pleased with the excellent progress made in both bilateral and multilateral defence cooperation.
Issues of bilateral defence cooperation such as training, joint exercises and expanding the cooperation in defence science research and technology were discussed. Both sides also noted the progress towards efforts in strengthening peace and security in the region.
The bilateral defence relations between both countries was formalised through the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation in 1992. The meeting also agreed for the next meeting to take place in Bandar Seri Begawan in 2017.
Before the meeting, Datin Paduka Hajah Suriyah paid a courtesy call to Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Sri Abdul Rahim to discuss issues relating to regional defence cooperation such as the ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting.
