ADSOM LEADERS CONVENE VIRTUALLY

BOLKIAH GARRISON, Friday, 15 May 2020 – The first ever virtual ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting (ADSOM) convened today following from the momentum of progress achieved from ADSOM WG earlier this week. The Meeting was chaired by Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Minister of Defence, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, in his capacity as Vietnam ADSOM Leader. 

Representing the Ministry of Defence of Brunei Darussalam was Brigadier General (Retired) Dato Seri Pahlawan Shahril Anwar bin Haji Ma’awiah, Permanent Secretary of Defence, Brunei Darussalam ADSOM Leader.

The ADSOM Leaders discussed the gravity of the COVID-19 at the national, regional and global level, the ASEAN Member States’ responses to address the outbreak, as well as commended Vietnam’s proactive approach in conducting the virtual meeting to discuss ways in which the defence sectoral can contribute and complement existing efforts to address the situation.

Despite the challenges posed by the physical distancing as a result of COVID-19, the conduct of ADSOM online espoused the sentiments reflected in the Joint Statement by the ASEAN Defence Ministers on Defence Cooperation Against Disease Outbreaks during the ADMM Retreat held in February 2020, notably in enhancing practical cooperation among ASEAN defence establishments for sharing information and best practices.

KETUA-KETUA ADSOM MENGHADIRI MESYUARAT SECARA TALIAN

BOLKIAH GARISON, Jumaat, 15 Mei 2020 – Mesyuarat Kumpulan Kerja Pegawai-Pegawai Kanan Pertahanan ASEAN (ADSOM) secara talian telah diadakan buat julung kalinya pada pagi ini bagi meneruskan momentum dari mesyuarat ADSOM WG beberapa hari lalu. Mesyuarat tersebut dipengerusikan oleh Leftenan Jeneral Kanan Nguyen Chi Vinh, Timbalan Menteri Pertahanan Republik Sosialis Vietnam, selaku Ketua ADSOM Vietnam.

Mewakili Kementerian Pertahanan Negara Brunei Darussalam ialah Brigedier Jeneral (B) Dato Seri Pahlawan Shahril Anwar bin Haji Ma’awiah, Setiausaha Tetap Kementerian Pertahanan, selaku Ketua ADSOM Negara Brunei Darussalam.

Semasa mesyuarat tersebut, Ketua-Ketua ADSOM telah membincangkan COVID-19 sebagai satu isu penting di peringkat kebangsaan, rantau dan antarabangsa, tindakan negara-negara ASEAN dalam menangani penularan wabak tersebut, serta memuji pendekatan Vietnam yang proaktif dalam menjalankan mesyuarat tersebut secara talian untuk membincangkan usaha-usaha sektoral pertahanan dalam menyumbang dan melengkapkan usaha-usaha yang sedia ada dalam menangani wabak tersebut.

Meskipun adanya penjarakkan fizikal berikut daripada penularan wabak COVID-19, pengendalian mesyuarat ADSOM secara talian ini mencerminkan hasrat di dalam Kenyataan Bersama oleh Menteri-Menteri Pertahanan ASEAN dalam Kerjasama Pertahanan dalam Menentang Penularan Penyakit semasa ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) Retreat yang telah berlangsung pada bulan Februari 2020, terutamanya dalam meningkatkan kerjasama praktikal di antara pertubuhan pertahanan ASEAN untuk perkongsian maklumat dan amalan terbaik.
