17th BRUNEI DARUSSALAM – AUSTRALIA JOINT DEFENCE WORKING COMMITTEE MEETING

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA, Thursday, 28 November 2019 – The 17th Joint Defence Working Committee (JDWC) meeting between Brunei Darussalam and Australia was held today at HMAS Moreton in Brisbane, Australia. 

The meeting was co-chaired by Haji Adi Ihram bin Dato Paduka Haji Mahmud, Director of Defence Policy at the Ministry of Defence and Ms Ximena Morrisby, Acting Assistant Secretary for South East Asia, International Policy Division of the Department of Defence, Australia.

During the meeting, both sides expressed their satisfaction on the longstanding and close friendship between both countries including in the field of defence. Both sides discussed a broad spectrum of issues including the framework of their bilateral defence engagement; shared multilateral engagements within the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus); and exchanged views on regional security dynamics of mutual concern. 

As part of the JDWC programme, the Brunei Darussalam delegation visited the Gallipoli Baracks to witness Exercise MALLEE BULL, a bilateral exercise conducted between the Royal Brunei Land Force (RBLF) and Australian Army, where the delegation interacted with the personnel involved in the exercise. The Brunei Darussalam delegation also had the honour of visiting the ANZAC Memorial Square for a wreath laying session to pay respects and remember the contributions of those whose lives were claimed during the Second World War.

The JDWC meeting was established following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation between Brunei Darussalam and Australia on 10 May 1999. Since the signing, both sides have over the last two decades fostered closer defence as well as military cooperation through multiple interactions including exchange of visits; additional agreements; meetings such as the JDWC and intelligence exchanges; military exercises; courses; trainings; and symposiums. 

In addition to bilateral activities, the JDWC meeting also discussed shared multilateral engagements within the ADMM-Plus process as Brunei Darussalam and Australia will become the co-chairs of the ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Group on Military Medicine (EWG on MM) for the upcoming 2020-2023 cycle.



MESYUARAT JAWATANKUASA KERJA PERTAHANAN BERSAMA DI ANTARA NEGARA BRUNEI DARUSSALAM DAN AUSTRALIA KALI KE-17

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA, Khamis, 28 November 2019 – Mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Kerja Pertahanan Bersama (JKPB) di antara Negara Brunei Darussalam dan Australia kali yang ke-17 telah berlangsung pada hari di HMAS Moreton, Brisbane, Australia. 

Mesyuarat itu telah dipengerusikan bersama oleh Haji Adi Ihram bin Dato Paduka Haji Mahmud, Pengarah Dasar Pertahanan, Kementerian Pertahanan dan Ms Ximena Morrisby, Pemangku Penolong Setiausaha Asia Tenggara, Divisyen Dasar Antarabangsa, Jabatan Pertahanan Australia.

Semasa mesyuarat tersebut, kedua-dua belah pihak merakamkan rasa puas hati di atas hubungan persahabatan yang rapat dan kian lama terjalin di antara Negara Brunei Darussalam dan Australia termasuk di bidang pertahanan. Kedua-dua belah pihak membincangkan pelbagai isu-isu berkepentingan termasuk rangkai kerja interaksi pertahanan dua hala; perkongsiaan interaksi pelbagai hala di bawah mesyuarat ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus); serta bertukar pandangan mengenai dengan isu-isu sekuriti serantau.

Semasa berada di Brisbane, Australia, delegasi Negara Brunei Darussalam berpeluang untuk membuat lawatan ke Gallipoli Baracks untuk menyaksikan Eksesais MALLEE BULL iaitu latihan ketenteraan dua hala yang dikendalikan oleh Tentera Darat Diraja Brunei (TDDB) dan Australian Army dan sekaligus berinteraksi bersama anggota-anggota yang terlibat dalam eksesais itu. Delegasi Negara Brunei Darussalam juga berkesempatan untuk melawat ANZAC Memorial Square bagi sesi wreath laying untuk memberikan penghormatan ke atas mereka yang telah kehilangan nyawa mereka semasa Perang Dunia Kedua.

Mesyuarat JKPB itu ditubuhkan setelah penandatanganan Memorandum Persefahaman di antara Negara Brunei Darussalam pada 10 Mei 1999. Dengan perjanjian tersebut, kedua-dua belah pihak telah mengeratkan lagi kerjasama pertahanan dan ketenteraan melalui pelbagai interaksi termasuk pertukaran lawatan; perjanjian-perjanjian; mesyuarat seperti JKPB dan pertukaran perisikan; eksesais ketenteraan; kursus; latihan dan simposium. 

Di samping aktiviti-aktiviti dua hala, JKPB juga membincangkan interaksi pelbagai hala yang dikongsi bersama Australia di peringkat ADMM-Plus memandangkan Negara Brunei dan Australia akan menjadi pengerusi bersama ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Group on Military Medicine bagi kitaran 2020-2023.
