ROYAL BRUNEI NAVY ATTENDS WESTERN PACIFIC NAVAL SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP (WPNS) 2014

1CHINA, Thursday 16 January 2014 - Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) delegation led by Lt Col (L) Zainorin bin Zainal Abidin, Base Commandant of RBN has attended the Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS) Workshop 2014 in NCC, Nanjing, China.

The focus of the four-day workshop (14 - 17 January) is to discuss on issues related to the update of Code for Unalerted Encounters at Sea (CUES), Multilateral Humanitarian Aid Disaster Relief (HADR) Response, the practice of WPNS HA/DR Document in multilateral exercises, the approval for Pakistan to become an ‘Observer Status’ member in WPNS and discussion on WPNS future activities.

Rear Admiral Han Xzaohu, Assistant Chief of Staff of People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) as the Chairman of WPNS Workshop 2014, in his opening speech, highlighted the workshop as a mechanism in enhancing mutual understanding, trust and cooperation that contributes to maritime peace and stability in the region, the importance of sharing ideas and pragmatic cooperation towards better friendship between WPNS members.

Over the past 22 years since its establishment, WPNS has been playing an important role in the maritime security cooperation of the region and one of the most influential cooperative mechanisms for maritime security. WPNS is a platform for exchanging matters on regional maritime security and also to develop trust and friendship between members.

A total of 58 participants from 20 countries attended the WPNS Workshop 2014.
