I’ve been in 2 casual relationships in the past 15 months. At the time I really was not interested in seriously dating at all, or even casually dating. But I met 2 guys who struck my interest for some reason. Both lasted 6 weeks or less. In the beginning of each, it was simple and casual. One was definitely a rebound, the other was a great guy I knew was interesting and I liked. The first, being a rebound, seems simple enough. After a couple weeks I realized I was dating someone for all the wrong reasons and I was lying to mysel – I needed time to heal and be alone. I was honest about it and ended it. The second was more difficult. He was great. I genuinely liked him and I thought he was a good guy. But after six weka he was beginning to develop an attachment I just couldn’t reciprocate. I had to really examine why, and ultimately I came to the conclusion that there were a few possible reasons for that. First was that maybe I was still stuck on my past. Second possibility was that we didn’t ultimately share enough in common, he was more of a homebody. Either way, I ended it because I felt like he was developing feelings I was mostly certain I couldn’t return and that struck me as wrong. Instead of risking and ‘waiting to see’ I cut the cord. Both ended kindly & easily (or so it seems). In a sense, that’s successful – it ended before any of us were hurt. But it seems like in a casual relationship, the only way for both parties to walk away reasonably unscathed is to keep it short.
