I’m a grown sexually active woman who has been having sex for 25 years now, who has taken college-level sex education classes, read widely on the subject, and have been involved with organizations engaged in HIV prevention efforts. But this “the sky is falling” “you could die as the result of one sexual encounter” nonsense is offensive and counterproductive to effective sex education efforts.

People are going to have sex. People are going to have sex with people with whom they are not in a monogamous committed relationship. People are going to have sex with people with whom they *thought* they were in a monogamous committed relationship, but the other partner didn’t honor that commitment.

Let’s stop trying to scare them to death and start teaching them effective communication strategies so that they wouldn’t rather just lie than give their partner the information needed to properly assess their STI risk.
