If we apply this same principle to relationships, and ask the question “who should be happiest?”, the answer should be the individual who was free to make a choice in relationships, and then made an irreversible choice (or, at least, a choice that would be difficult to reverse).

Thus, my answer to your question of who should be happiest is the Family Man. The Beta, as some would call him (though if you’ve been following my discussion with Yohami in one of his other threads, you will see that I define Beta differently than typical, in a much more practical sense). The man who chose a wife and sees his choice as irreversible should, theoretically, be ultimately happier than the “alpha” who flits from relationship to relationship and develops a “choice addiction”. This presumes, of course, that he does not get frivillously divorced and taken to the cleaners by his wife in today’s legal environment.

In fact, so much of the epidemic of frivillous divorce in this day and age is, IMHO, due to the perception of choice and the reversibility of the decision of marriage. If marriage is not an irrevocable choice (or, at least, a choice that would not be significantly dis-advantageous to reverse), the perception of having choices re-asserts itself and we are less likely to be happy in marriage.

Sorry to post again (especially after such a long prior post), but one more comment @Cinzia (if she’s even reading):
