“We have one student from Brunei this year – please stand up.” Image of the Bruneian flag flashed onto the white screen while I emerged amongst the legion of international students gathered in the Social Science Building’s lecture hall. I was humbled by the privilege to stand before others at the International Students’ Welcoming Event organized by the Services for International Students and Scholars (SISS). It was a moment to cherish for I began to find a home away from home. To be surrounded by wide variety of individuals in an already ethnically diverse Californian college town is indeed what I expected from this new chapter of my life. However, because I have been questioned about my choice to study on the West Coast of United States where there is hardly any other Bruneian, I have decided to enlighten the curious ones by sharing my euphoric (and not lonely after all) experience as a first-year undergraduate, here in University of California-Davis.

On the 17th of March, 1330hrs, 09e Welbexians set off to HMS Bristol in Portsmouth for 5 days of Leadership Exercise. It took us about 4 hours to get there by coach. Unfortunately for some, iPods or phones were accidentally left in their luggage, hence leaving us with nothing to do other than to contemplate about life or sleep or for the more hyperactive, socialize. We were divided into 4 platoons and each platoon was divided into 8 sections of 5 people. I was part of 3 platoon 5 section which for me was a really good group considering that all five of us were from different houses. This week had been much anticipated by most, especially since the upper sixth had repeatedly described it as the 'most enjoyable exercise'.
