MAGISTRATE VISIT TO MILITARY LEGAL UNIT DIRECTORATE OF PERSONNEL MINISTRY OF DEFENCE

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Monday 20 Nov 2006 - The Military Legal Unit, Directorate of Personnel, Ministry of Defence hosted a working visit from Members of the Judiciary, Courts of Negara Brunei Darussalam on the 20th November 2006.

The Judiciary comprises of 12 personnel being lead by Deputy Chief Registrar Madame Lim Siew Yen. Present to welcome the distinguished visitors were YM Lt Col Haji Yussof bin Haji Abd Rahman, the Act Director of Personnel, Lt Col Hj Harif bin Haji Ibrahim, the SO1 Legal, senior officers from the directorate and Military legal Unit personnel.

The purpose of the visit was to enhance bilateral relationships between the Brunei Supreme Courts and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces in general and as avenue to impart knowledge with regards to the Royal Brunei Armed Forces disciplinary processes especially with regards to the Court Martial system. The distinguished visitors were given a brief presentation regarding the organisation of the Ministry of Defence as a whole, the role of the Directorate of Personnel and a more detailed brief on the Military Legal Unit especially its roles and responsibilities. The briefing also touched on the current disciplinary system being practise by the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and administrative actions as an alternative to the disciplinary action.

Some members of the judiciary of the Brunei Supreme Courts are also appointed Judge Advocates for the present Court Martial system. Therefore, the visit serve as an avenue to provide an insight and understanding into the defence institution albeit court-martial processes.

Visits of this nature is also aimed at strengthening the current working interactions between both parties.
