
Twenty officers from the Ministry of Defence and
the Royal Brunei Armed Forces were amongst the approximately
three hundred local and international participants
attending the International Forum on Disaster Relief
held from the 10 July to 12 July 2006. The event,
held at the Rizqun International Hotel, Brunei Darussalam,
was organised by the Institute of Medicine of the
University Brunei Darussalam.
Officiating
at the opening ceremony of the International Forum
on Disaster Relief on the 10 July 2006 was His Royal
Highness Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni
Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda
Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah,
the Crown Prince and the Senior Minister at the
Prime Minister Office. Also in attendance at the
ceremony were the Government Ministers and Deputy
Ministers.
During
the three days forum, sixty working papers were
presented by various local and international speakers.
The aim of the forum was to address strategies and
mechanism for international cooperation in disaster
preparedness and disaster relief. This includes
all aspect of disaster management, surveillance,
reduction, response, coordination, post-disaster
issues, communication, bioterrorism and diseases
epidemic and volunteerism.
From
the Ministry of Defence, two senior speakers presented
their respective working papers focusing on the
Royal Brunei Armed Forces involvement in regional
disaster relief. Lt Col(L) Awang Zaini bin Haji
Awang Damit gave a presentation on the paper entitled
'Providing Meaningful Aid with Limited Resources'
while Lt Col(U) Hamzah bin Haji Sahat presented
the paper on 'Aceh Tsunami - The Royal Brunei Armed
Forces First Ever Participation in Disaster Relief'.
A showcase of the RBAF involvement in regional disaster
assistance was also amongst several other government
agencies displays at the hotel.
