Permanent Secretary (Administration & Finance)
HAJAH SURIYAH HAJI UMARPERMANENT SECRETARY (ADMINISTRATION AND FINANCE)
HAJAH SURIYAH HAJI UMAR was born on the 14th of February 1960. She holds a degree in Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Surrey, England in 1982.
After graduating she straight away joined the Government Service and started her career as an Auditor in the Audit Department of the Prime Minister’s Office. While in service in 1985, she pursued further studies and obtain a Post Graduate Diploma in Systems Analysis from the National University of Singapore.
In November 1986, she was promoted to Senior Finance Officer and transferred to the Ministry of Defence. While still in the Ministry of Defence she assumed various postion within the Directorate of Finance and Procurement (Directorate of Finance and Acquisition as it is known now). From Senior Finance Officer, she later assumed the post Acting Assistant Director of Procurement from January 1990 to February 1996, and then promoted to Assistant Director of Finance from February 1996 and finally as Director of Finance and Acquisition from July 1999 to December 2005.
In December 2005, she was appointed as Deputy Accountant General at the Treasury Department in Ministry of Finance and later took charged as Accountant General in August 2008.
On the 15th January 2010, she was appointed as Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR). In MIPR her responsibilities amongst others include looking after Finance, Administration, Food Security, HoB, Brunei Halal Brand and also On-line Business Licensing System project. Her tenure in MIPR lasted for 9 months and by 15 September 2010 she was assigned back to the Ministry of Defence as the Permanent Secretary (Administration and Finance).
Throughout her career, she was bestowed with several honours and awards namely ‘The Most Blessed Order of Setia Negara 4th Class (PSB)’ in 1992, ‘The Most Honourable Order of Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei 3rd Class (SMB)’ in 1998, ‘Long Service Medal (PKL)’ in 2004 and ‘The Order of Setia Negara 3rd Class (SMB)’ in 2005.
