After gaining independence from the British Government, Brunei Darussalam established diplomatic relations with neighboring and friendly countries. In defence, the establishment of such relationship is of great importance in order to foster friendly relations beneficial to Brunei Darussalam. This spirit of friendship, understanding and mutual cooperation would always be nurtured and preserved so as to guarantee the peace, progress and independence of Brunei Darussalam based on the policy of mutual respect towards the independence, sovereignty, equality and existence of the nation of Brunei Darussalam that is free from outside interference.

His Majesty's frequent visits to other countries, either on formal state occasions or official engagements help to strengthen a bond of friendship and cooperation in defence.
