After independence, His Majesty, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam set-up the Ministry of Defence and re-organized the structure of Royal Brunei Armed Forces. In 1987, the Ministry of Defence was divided into two sections comprising the civilian and military.
The year 1987 also marked the early inception of the Public Relations Unit under the Directorate of Politics and Organisation, Ministry of Defence that was headed by a Director. The Directorate encompassed four main Sections namely Legal Section, Public Relations Section, Research Section and Secretariat Section.
Overall, initial personnel of the Public Relations Section comprised of civilians. The Section was headed by a Senior Public Relations Officer, and assisted by two other Public Relations Officer. Other staff members included two clerks and two cameramen.
Amongst the responsibilities of the Public Relations Section were to present talks on the Ministry’s organizational structure, liaison with mass media and coordinate visits from inside and outside of the country.
In recognition by the Information Department, the Public Relations Section of the Ministry of Defence was labeled as one of the best public relations unit within a government ministry and department. The recognition was based on the development and established body of the section.
In the year 2002, the Public Relations Section was transferred to the Secretariat Office of the Permanent Secretary II (Finance and Development), Ministry of Defence, Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Kani. Since then, the section was known as Public Relations Unit and reports directly to the Permanent Secretary II, Ministry of Defence.

clerks and cameramen. This new staff addition was to assist in
shouldering the ever increasing responsibilities of the Public
Relations Unit.

Currently, the post of MINDEF Spokesman is held by Leftenan Kolonel (L) Rahaimi bin Haji Abd Karim, who reported for duty commencing January 2009 until now.
SEJARAH UPA
Setelah mencapai Kemerdekaan, Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam menubuhkan Kementerian Pertahanan dan menyusun semula struktur Angkatan Bersenjata Diraja Brunei. Pada tahun 1987, Kementerian Pertahanan dibahagikan kepada dua bahagian iaitu awam dan tentera.
Tahun 1987 juga menandakan detik permulaan penubuhan Unit Perhubungan Awam dibawah Jabatanarah Politik dan Organisasi yang diketuai oleh seorang Pengarah. Jabatanarah tersebut mempunyai 4 bahagian iaitu Bahagian Hal Ehwal Undang-Undang, Bahagian Perhubungan Awam, Bahagian Kaji Selidik dan Bahagian Urusetia.
Secara menyeluruh anggota-anggota Bahagian Perhubungan Awam adalah terdiri dari pegawai-pegawai dan kakitangan awam sahaja. Unit tersebut diketuai oleh seorang Pegawai Perhubungan Awam Kanan dan dibantu oleh dua Pegawai Perhubungan awam. Kakitangan yang lain terdiri dari dua orang kerani dan dua orang Jurugambar.
Antara tanggungjawab Bahagian Perhubungan Awam pada masa itu ialah memberikan taklimat-taklimat organisasi Kementerian, hubungan dengan media massa dan lawatan-lawatan dari dalam serta luar negeri.
Sebagai satu penghargaan dari Jabatan Penerangan, Bahagian Perhubungan Awam di Kementerian Pertahanan merupakan salah satu unit perhubungan awam yang terbaik di dalam Kementerian-Kementerian dan Jabatan-Jabatan Kerajaan. Ini adalah berdasarkan perkembangan serta pertubuhan Bahagian Perhubungan tersebut.
Pada tahun 2002, Bahagian Perhubungan Awam telah dipindah ke Pejabat Urusetia Setiausaha Tetap II (Kewangan dan Pembangunan), Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Kani. Sejak itu, Bahagian Perhubungan Awam mula dikenali sebagai Unit Perhubungan Awam dan melapor secara langsung kepada Setiausaha Tetap II Kementerian Pertahanan.
Pada tahun 2003, Unit Perhubungan Awam mula diserapkan anggota-anggota tentera dengan penubuhan jawatan Jurucakap Kementerian Pertahanan sebagai Ketua Unit Perhubungan Awam. Pada tahun 2006, beberapa anggota tentera lain-lain peringkat juga mula diserapkan dalam Unit Perhubungan Awam yang memberi khidmat sebagai kerani dan jurugambar. Tambahan ini adalah bagi menampung tanggungjawab Unit Perhubungan Awam yang kian berkembang.
